Maize production

Alejo community support project has heard the cry of the small scale farmer,

Despite being the major contributor to the national food security the small scale farmer has been working on a loss as the   cost of doing business has become very high such that the input surpasses the output. The following are some of the   reasons   why small scale work at a loss;

  • Traditional way of farming
  • Cost of fertilizer
  • Cost of labor

Alejo has curtailed all three problems of the small scale farmer by introduction the following strategies

  • Improved management of farming-farmers are being discouraged to do traditional farming where they produce an average of 10 by 50 kg maize bags in a lima and being taught to do improved management where they now produce 50  x 50 kg bags of maize in a lima.
  • The introduction of organic fertilizer-farmers are being trained to use organic fertilizer which helps them have a good harvest
  • The cost of labor which the farmer go through during weeding is very high hence the organization is training farmers in the use of herbicides which is cheaper over traditional way of weeding.
